However, the dvd industry started adding an extra layer or protection on top of the encryption (about 8 years ago?) k9copy could reencode the disk and make you one without the decss encryption. (it might even have a linux version now)įrom my personal experience, from many years back.Īges ago you could use dd, to image a Dvd disk. I think it would need to crack the CSS encryption with libdecss or libdvdread, which would perhaps be slower and, I suspect it wouldn't work on a hardware DVD player at all so, this isn't a great option. I don't think this will work as quickly on another computer. Playing an image file made by copying the disc using dd (so without decrypting the contents), after using vobcopy to authenticate with the drive, works in VLC but, I suspect this is because the keys are cached. This is probably my best bet (since what I was hoping to do, make an identical copy of the disc, isn't possible because of the hidden part containing the keys not being writeable to DVD-/+R/RWs. Because these copy all the files on the disc, this includes the menus so, it is relatively easy to make a new iso image in future. Unfortunately, it sounds like an image of the DVD isn't enough to make an identical backup because the hidden part of the DVD containing the keys isn't copied and cannot be written to a DVD-/+R/RW so, my only option is to copy the disc contents with vobcopy or dvdbackup and write then unencrypted to a new disc if the original is scratched. I would like to be able to write it to a new DVD should the originals be scratched.Įdit: So, it sounds like, from /u/giantsparklerobot's comment and link that the problem I was having using dd is because the drive needs to unlock access to some sectors, which happens when a player authenticates with the drive. These seem not to happen if I have already played the video so, I suspect these are copy protection related (and the DVDs are brand new so, I don't think they are scratched and, I get the same issues with a different drive).ĭoes anyone know of a way to do this (that is quicker and easier to automate than opening VLC, playing the whole DVD and then doing it with dd)?Įdit: Just to be clear: I am looking to make a backup image of the DVD (an iso file), not rip it to video files. blk_update_request: critical target error, dev sr0, sector 12870576 sr 4:0:0:0: tag#0 Sense Key : Hardware Error Using dd, I get IO errors with kernel log messages like the following: sr 4:0:0:0: tag#0 FAILED Result: hostbyte=DID_OK driverbyte=DRIVER_SENSE I'm looking to make an image of the DVD itself, rather than extracting the video from it. I'm looking for a way to make images of copy protected DVDs (DVD videos).
